Purusottama masa - A most special invitation for reaching perfection in Krishna consciousness

We all know that the months of the year are imbued with the special potency
of the seasons. And we all experienced recently the power of spring that
brought life to nature. What an opportunity to meditate about Krishna’s
statement: ´Of seasons I am the flower-bearing spring!´ (Bhagavad-Gita 10.35).

Now, an even more powerful time has arrived: The month of Purusottama (May
16th- June 13th). This is what Krishna says about this special month:

"Just by observing Purusottama month and becoming a devotee, one can easily
cross over this material ocean and return back to Godhead. Observance of
this Purusottama month is the best of all austerities. Just as a farmer
produces a rich harvest by planting seeds in nicely cultivated land, so an
intelligent man who practices devotional service towards the Supreme Lord in
this Purusottama month will enjoy a blissful life while in this world and,
after leaving his body, he will return back to Godhead.

You might ask: "Wait a minute- what about my bad karma?"

Krishna answer is quite clearly:

"The worshipper of this month will be able to burn all his past sinful
reactions to ashes, and after enjoying a blissful life in the material
realm, he will return back to Godhead

The extraordinary potency placed in this month has been bestowed by Lord
Krishna Himself - who takes special care of those who have no other shelter
than Himself, and thus surrender to Him exclusively. Because this month is
technically speaking an extra month as far as the moon calendar is
concerned, it had originally been considered as much rejectable as human
waste. But the Lord made an exception and blessed it with many benedictions.

Krishna, thus, solemnly declared:

"I shall make this extra month just like Me in quality, fame, opulence,
realization, success, and in giving benediction to devotees. This month will
become equally potent to Me. I am bestowing all of My divine qualities in
this abused month. Named after Me, this month will be famous as Purusottama
month in this world.

(All quotations are from the Purusottama Mahatyam in the Padma Purana)

The minimum observance:
* Take bath in a holy river
(I do this by sprinkling a few drops of Ganga water over my head)

* Worship Krishna by chanting His Holy Name
(I already chant regularly - but I like to make sure that in this month I
increase the quality and quantity)

* Give charity
(The biggest charity is transcendental knowledge)

Extra Observances as found in the sacred scriptures:

* Chant daily the 15th chapter of Bhagavad Gita called Purusottama-yoga
* Chant daily the Sri Jagannathastakam which glorifies the Lord of
* Offer daily a small ghee lamp to Sri Sri Radha Krishna (deities, photos,

It is also advised to increase your hearing/reading of sacred scriptures,
sing bhajans that imbibe your Krishna Consciousness with the presence of the
Lord, and refrain from blaspheming devotees in mind, words and deeds (Of
course, these advices remain relevant also outside the month of

When the month of Purusottama has ended, you can break your observance by

"O Supreme Lord! O Sanatana! O Purusottama! O Lord Hari! I offer my
obeisances unto You. May You and Your beloved Srimati Radhika please accept
my offerings. I offer my repeated obeisances unto Radha-Syamasundara, who
wears effulgent yellow garments on His beautiful body

Offer pushpanjali and dandavats to Radhe-Syama.

Give charity to 3, 5, 7, or 9 brahmanas to the best of your ability (the best charity
is to give Srimad Bhagavatam to a qualified Vaisnava devotee brahmana. This
charity will deliver all your forefathers to Goloka Dhama and the
association of Lord Purusottama). Other recommended gifts are: new clothes,
gold, financial help, new shoes, or whatever is needed in life by the
recipient. Also, feed brahmanas with prasadam.

1. All the holy places in the world come to reside in your body.
2. One who observes Purusottama Month with faith and devotion will go back
home, back to Godhead, to serve Radha-Govinda eternally in Goloka Vrindavana
at the end of his life!

Let us firmly fix our minds and hearts on the ultimate purpose of our lives
and enthusiastically practice whatever is possible for us. The main point to
remember is that we do what we do on a regular basis as a loving
offering to the Divine Couple Sri Sri Radha and Krishna.

Wishing you all the best,

Your humble servant,
Sacinandana Swami
