Nityananda’s Appearance Day

By Sacinandana Swami

Everyone rejoice! The most merciful form of the Lord is coming!

Lord Nityananda’s great devotee, Vrndavana dasa Thakura writes,

“Lord Nityananda is very dear to Lord Caitanya, therefore the four Vedas sing His glories.” (Sri Caitanya-bhagavata, Madhya, 10.300)

Gauranga always praised Lord Nityananda with the most affectionate words like, “He is my very soul!”

Vrndavana dasa Thakura continues,

“And Nityananda declared, ‘I am the servant of Lord Caitanya.’ Day and night, He did not say anything to the contrary.” (Sri Caitanya-bhagavata, Madhya, 10.302)

Being a servant was His identity. Inside and outside there was no other project, not even in His dreams.

To conclude, Vrndavana dasa Thakura teaches,

“By His mercy, one attains attachment for Lord Caitanya. Simply by worshiping Lord Nityananda one will not face danger anywhere.”

“Nitai always distributes the service of Lord Caitanya to others. Therefore Lord Nityananda is dear to all the Vaisnavas, for they achieve the platform of bhakti by His mercy.” (Sri Caitanya-bhagavata, Madhya, 10.303; 10.307; 10.309)

Don’t fear the repetition of birth and death, nor your inner shadows. By Lord Nityananda’s merciful glance everything will be all right. He is most capable to protect you since He is Ananta Sesa who upholds all the universes on His heads, and He is Lord Balarama who is always engaged in the welfare of the world.

How to obtain the mercy of Lord Nityananda?

When we hear such glorification, the question arises, “How can I relate today to such a merciful Lord and obtain His blessings?”

The answer is quite simple: by sharing with others what you have obtained. In other words, you can obtain Lord Nityananda’s mercy by sharing His mercy on you and following in His lotus footsteps. Remember that it was He who famously delivered Jagai and Madhai, the most fallen drunkards.

One of my close godbrothers shared with me something Srila Prabhupada told him, “To get the mercy of Lord Nityananda, you have to approach people like Jagai and Madhai.” Çréla Prabhupäda wrote in this connection,

“The devotee knows that the Lord wants all the fallen souls to come back home and therefore the devotees always try to induce the conditioned souls to take to Krishna consciousness by various ways and means.” (Letter to Yeager, 1970)

Thus, don’t just desire mercy – try to share it!

I wish you all the best and may you all fill your hearts with the mercy of Sri Nityananda!
