Overwhelmed with love by Krishna’s attractiveness

By Sacinandana Swami

Once a devotee-friend of mine was asked in an interview what perfection in bhakti would be like. He answered that perfection in bhakti means one is overwhelmed with love.

Today I found this wonderful verse by Srila Rupa Goswami which describes how the heart of the bhakta (a practitioner of bhakti) becomes inflamed with a love that overcomes all kinds of obstacles.

Tan-mohanatā, yathā —
vidūrān mārāgniṃ hṛdaya-ravi-kānte prakaṭayann
udasyan dharmenduṃ vidadhad abhito aga-paṭalam |
kathaṃ hā nas trāṇaṃ sakhi mukulayan bodha-kumudaṃ
tarasvī kṛṣṇābabhre madhurima-bharārko’bhyudayate
(Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 2.1.326)

I am in danger!
Like a sun, Krishna’s sweetness has risen in
the sky of His dark blue body.

This sun has set my heart ablaze
which is like a suryakanta jewel (1),
and produced a mass of red clouds in all directions
and driven the moon of dharma away (2).

Now – due to the extreme strength of
the sun of Krishna’s sweetness
the white water-lily of my intelligence,
which is dependent on the moonlight
is drooping and has become totally powerless.

And the sun of Krishna’s sweetness is still rising speedily…
What am I to do now?
How can I be delivered from this condition?

Once Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura addressed the lack of attraction to Krishna which most of us experience: Actually everyone is attracted by the all-attractive Lord – like iron is attracted to a magnet. Only rusty iron does not respond. To remove this “rustiness” from our heart, shravanam and kirtanam (hearing about Krishna’s name, form, qualities and pastimes and glorifying them) is our only chance.

How true!

(1) Suryakanta manis capture the sunrays. The sakhis heart is pure and brilliant like that gem.
(2) The moon god is the presiding deity of righteous intellect
