Vrindavan Diary 2014 - Part 3

A Mountain of Love

This year I celebrated the auspicious day of Govardhan Puja in the Ayurveda Hospital in Delhi. Giriraja Himself had personally come from Vraja with a Brajabasi brahmana and His devotees to accept our worship. The therapies on that day had to be postponed until Giriraja drove back to Vraja.

When Krishna lifted Govardhana Hill and held Him up for seven days and nights just like an umbrella against Indra’s devastating torrential rains, Krishna had at least three audiences and three lessons in mind:

1) He wanted to show the Brajabasis that if they exclusively surrendered to His instructions, they would be protected by Him. Only by loving Him would everything be taken care of. They did not need anyone else, not even the powerful demigods.

2) To Indra Krishna wanted to show that He, not Indra, was the Lord of the Universe

3) To all His devotees Krishna wanted to demonstrate for all time that He, Krishna, was their ultimate shelter and that He was sufficiently powerful to protect them from all the consequences of full surrender.

Srila Rupa Goswami proclaimed a blessing for all surrendered devotees, in which he invokes this protective power of the Lord:

“May the left arm of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, whose eyes are like the petals of a lotus flower, always protect you. With His left arm He raised Govardhana Hill as if it were a toy.” (Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu 2.1.62)

We have also been able to experience the shelter of Giriraja in our lives.
Since I was a young man I have been coming yearly to take shelter in His valleys.

Last year Giriraja gave us a huge piece of land by His side and this year He has entered the minds of the Land Development Commission of Mathura and has inspired them to give us permission to start building a retreat center next to Him. We intend to start building next year in order to shelter the many devotees there.

Giriraja Maharaja ki jaya!
